Wizardry - Mook trivia, you'll be surprised!
Where does the Mook race in Wizadry 6-7-8 comes from... really, I mean not the definition given in the Wizardry game manual but where did the idea of the Mook race come from? Well, it comes way back from the original Apple II version of the first Wizardry scenario. Let me explain. In the first scenario on level 6 at square 19 east, 7 north a strange message appears as follows:
SUDDENLY YOU SEE A GROUP OF 3 HUMAN- OIDS. ONE IS A BARBARIAN WITH A SWORD THAT GLOWS, ONE IS A SEXY FEMALE MAGE, AND THE THIRD LOOKS LIKE A HUGE OGRE! THE BARBARIAN POINTS TO THE END OF THE CORRIDOR AND YELLS "ARIEL.. OOKLA.. THIS WAY!! " AND THEY ALL RUN OFF!
Now there are 2 very special things about this message: first, the message appears only once in the game when you step on that sqare and never reappears again. Second, the message appears only in the original Apple II version (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong). Those reasons are why many Wizardry 1 maps out there don't even show it.
You may ask: what's it got to do with the Wizardry 1 scenario? It seems it is an inside joke by the designers but

So now you may ask what's the relation with the Mook race? Well, those three humanoids represent the characters
of what started out as a 1977 t.v. show titled Thundarr the Barbarian. Ookla mentionned in the Wiz 1 text above
is the name of one member of a sentient race called Mok. Mok = Mook !!! Click on this link---> link, see how the Mok and his friends look like and read on, you will be astonished!
Here's one picture of it:
