| Tibetan Terriers
are very family oriented and love to play with children. Both can
learn and enjoy a great deal from each other. Common sense must dictate
that no young child should be left alone with any dog of any breed.
Until the child is older and has learnt to successfully control the
dog under all circumstances all interaction between the two must be
adult supervised.
Children must be taught how to act around the dog
and the pup must be trained how to behave around children.
The dog must be trained in a non-aggressive manner
without resorting to force, physical domination or punishment for
control. Any method you use should be one that can be equally used
by your children.
Aggression creates aggression
Physical procedures such as restraint, grabbing the
scruff of the neck, forcing the dog on its back (alpha roll-over
), leash pulling , jerking and hanging etc. may curtail unwanted
behavior but only at the expense of damaging the dog’s temperament.
The family dog does not require domination it needs
psychological control and education.
Training
Train your dog using lure and reward methods that
are just as physically possible for your child to perform as they
are for you.
A training school which begins with puppy kindergarten
and socialization and involves the whole family in the classes is
the place to start.
Choose one that allows you to visit the school to
observe their training to be sure that you will be comfortable there.
With this training and mutual respect your family
and dog should enjoy a wonderful life together.
