surveillance: a being vigilant or watchful: supervision (Fr- surveiller- sur, over,veiller, to watch)
An idea of surveillance has permeated my paintings for years. The images are constructed from photos I compose or find. Suspended in time by the open / close of a shutter, then interpreted on canvas by the flurry of a brush, the figures create an undisclosed narrative. I tease the viewer with the possibility of a mundane situation requiring closer examination. Neither contorted nor imaginary, the translation to oil on canvas hinges on my interpretive examination of line and space and colour and balance. I have the artist's traditional obsession with the observation of form and reconstructing that situation for an audience to contemplate. Here is a survey some of my work...
