Burnt Island - about 1958 before resettlement
Kelly is one of the most common names in Newfoundland and the Bonavista Bay Kelly's show up in early records in Kings Cove, Plate Cove and Tickle Cove, however many of them settled on Burnt Island near Greenspond . The 1871 census shows the island with 16 families and a population of 130, ten of the families are Kelly. Burnt Island was resettled in the early 1960's at which time it was still predominently Kelly.
My maternal Grandmother Margaret Kelly (1862-1941) was born at Greenspond, the daughter of James Kelly of Burnt Island and Catherine Smith of Cape Cove or Greenspond. The family moved back to Brunt Island and then to Tickle Cove, but as a young girl she went to Kings Cove and lived with Mary her maternal grandmother, who had married George Connolly after the death of her first husband..
