Here is a relatively simple way to get started in miniatures ...
using an old breadbox from the thirties and dollhouse furniture also from the thirties,
you have created a miniature setup. There is no need to start with an expensive dollhouse
(the milk bottle in the background gives an indication of the time period which the breadbox is
from):
